Microsoft Office Training for Faculty

Here are simple-to-follow instructions for training yourself on numerous Microsoft Office programs like Excel, Word and Powerpoint. I also include a link to LAUSD information on how to best use your school e-mail.

Updates

If you are still using Microsoft 2003, please click this link to Microsoft, to update to Microsoft 2007 or 2010, if your computer supports it. It is free, but appears to be only for systems using Windows. (I need to look for an update for Apple users).Your ability to update will depend on the age of your computers. Check your computer to see what system you are using, then check system requirements before downloading.

 Microsoft Update

If you start having problems once you update to 2007 or 2010, go to Microsoft’s Support page.

Microsoft Support

All the information on this page is geared to Office 2007 users, since that is the system most faculty are likely to have or that their computers can support. However, if you have version 2003 or 2010, go to the following page for Microsoft training for these programs.

Microsoft Training for Different Versions

Outlook and Entourage

Have you tried to save Contacts in your LAUSD.net e-mail account only to run into a time-consuming, laborious process that is not user-friendly?

Use Microsoft Office’s Outlook or Entourage programs and connect them to your LAUSD account. These programs allow you to use all the tools you are used to using on your g-mail, yahoo, aol account at home. However, be sure to put it on the computer you will be using the most at school. You cannot open the program on any computer like you can with gmail, hotmail or yahoo.

LAUSD offers information on setting these two programs up for your school e-mail.

They have help for people using PCs, Apples  and Microsoft Office version 2003 and 2007. Click here to download the informational PDFs from LAUSD.

Word

I believe most people are fairly familiar with Word and how it works. The newest version (2010) has some new features, which you may want to become familiar with before having to use it under time constraints and getting frustrated.

If you are not sure how to put images in a Word document, follow this training, because these skills are required for the final project.

PowerPoint

Get tips on how to create a PowerPoint presentation. PowerPoint presentations are very easy to create. You can include videos and sound on PowerPoint presentations.

Excel

Microsoft Excel is an excellent supplement to your grading system.  Despite having an online grading system, I create a secondary spreadsheet that I use for each class. Here are some of the activities I use them for:

Keep a copy on a clipboard and check off homework completed. Do you want to sort students according to their grades? Put their grades into the spreadsheet and then sort according to that column. The LAUSD gradebook does not allow this sorting option, so it’s a good, easy alternative. Excel has a few quirky commands that differ from Word, so it’s a good idea to take the training. Want to see how you are doing? Take the three online tests at the end.
